Neil Papworth 1992

Communication:1900s

Neil Papworth sent the first SMS (Short Message Service) on the 3 December 1992 while working as a developer for Sema Group Telecoms. The Text he sent was "Merry Christmas" to Richard Jarvis, a director at Vodafone who had commissioned the technology.

Very Short
At first the messages had a 160-character limit. This led to the creation of txt spk (text speak), like LOL (laughing out loud) and emoticons :-) symbols made from keyboard characters to show emotions. This inspired the creation of emojis.
