Dolly the Sheep 1996


Dolly was the first mammal to be successfully cloned from an adult cell. Dolly was formed by taking a cell from the udder of her biological mother. She was cloned by Ian Wilmut and Keith Campbell.

Patience
The sheep was created by taking an embryo cell and inserting it into a sheep ovum. After 433 failed attempts an embryo was successful. The embryo was then placed inside a female sheep that went through a normal pregnancy.

Birth of a Star
The cloning was done at the Roslin Institute, university of Edinburgh in Scotland. Dolly was born 5th July 1996. On the choice the sheep's name Wilmut said
"Dolly is derived from a mammary gland cell and we couldn't think of a more impressive pair of glands than Dolly Parton's".
