Thoroughbred horse breed can be traced back to three stallions imported into England from the Middle East. The first was named Bryerley Turk and became the war horse of Captain Robert Byerley.

Averaging 16 Hands high (64 inches) and capable of speeds of 44mph they are commonly used in horse racing but, Thoroughbreds are also popular for show jumping, dressage, hunting, polo. The English Thoroughbred has since been introduced to most countries, where it is bred for racing or used to improve local breeds.
