Mary Poppins is the lead character in books written by P. L. Travers, which was first published in 1934.

Travers moved from a rented flat in London to a thatched cottage in Sussex. It was here, in the winter of 1933, that she began to write Mary Poppins.

Published in London in 1934, Mary Poppins was Travers' first literary success. Many sequels followed.

Travers' great aunt, Helen Morehead, who lived in Woollahra, Sydney, and when she visited Travers (Helen Lyndon Goff) in Queensland used to say, "Spit spot, into bed", was the inspiration for the character.

Plot
The books centre on a magical English nanny, Mary Poppins. She is blown by the East wind to Number 17 Cherry Tree Lane, London, and into the Banks's household to care for their children.
