Humphry Davy 1799

Medical
Nitrous oxide (N2O) was first synthesised in 1772 by chemist Joseph Priestley. The term "laughing gas" was coined by Humphry Davy due to the euphoric effects. He wrote about N2O;

As nitrous oxide appears capable of destroying physical pain, it may probably be used with advantage during surgical operations.

James Young Simpson 1847

Chloroform was first synthesized around 1830. In 1842 Robert Mortimer Glover discovered its anaesthetic properties on animals. Simpson was the first to demonstrate the safe anaesthetic effect of chloroform and popularise its use on humans.
